Eva Dugoff Age: 27 I'm one of the few people in the DC area who actually grew up here. I started riding my bike in college as a means of transportation, but I loved passing people (competitive what?) on the trails and racing the bus to Dupont Circle. So that's how this all started. I bought a road bike to do a triathlon with my friends. It was great even though the stupid full-aluminum bicycle hurt my butt. I've since learned a lot about finding the ride saddle. After college, I was a bike messenger for a bit for the love of racing cars. Now, I ride for fun and train and race when I get a chance. I've learned so much abut bikes and riding from working at Capitol Hill Bikes and riding with all the guys at Route 1 Velo. When I'm not at the shop, I'm pursuing my master's in public policy at George Washington University and interning in Congress.

Adrian Altura Age: 46 Originally a track geek. Started riding/racing in Manila in '81 after track (running) in high school/college. Raced in mostly on the San Diego, LA, Encine velodromes in '86-'89, eventually becoming a Cat 3 on the track (when there was no Cat 5). Rode on and off with no real racing until 2002, became a regular suburban slob and father of two. Got back into it from scratch via Greenbelt C races and Route 1 Velo Sunday rides. Currently a rider who can race on reasonably easy courses and sit in somebody else's armchair. With my motor, VO2 max of 57ml/kg, threshold power of 260-270W at 176-182 bpm for 5'9", 157 lbs, that's the extent of my gig. Trained on a budget of about 3-4 hrs a week, including 2 road rides of no more than 2hrs, the rest is trainer time with all intervals galore. My contribution to the R1V BAR point effort is all track work in 2 events: 3 kilo rides under 1:20 for the past 3 yrs (1:19.1,1:17.9,1:18.8) Cycling fetish: track bikes. Favorite Quote:

Bill Schieken Age: 40 I have been racing cyclocross since 2003. This will be my first year racing on the road. I live about five minutes from Arrow Bikes and saw that they had a Sunday ride. Brandon Lumm Born: 1974 I have always been into bike riding and started with freestyle BMX riding back when I was 11 or 12. I started road racing a little when I was in high school and did a bit more when I was in college but it was always in the diving off-season which was my main sport (springboard & platform). I moved around a bit and got a job in the DC area in 1999 where I met Rodges Ankrah at the Turkey Day Race. I started doing the roller races and training at the College Park Bike Shop with the club (which was then College Park Racing), made some great friends, drank some beer, and did some very fun racing. I eventually moved back to Atlanta, raced down there, and then my wife and I moved to Heidelberg, Germany where I only did a little road and mountain bike racing but did a lot of amazing riding. We’re back now and I’m excited about this next season and the great group of people that we have together, not just for the riding and competition, but for the camaraderie and the service that we as a group can give back to cycling and to the greater community. Brigham Lumm Born: 2/5/79 I moved to the D.C. area in 2007 because my brother got me a job; he also talked me into joining Route 1 Velo. I spent a couple of years after college as a bike messenger in Atlanta and have been riding road bikes for a while, but joining the team was my first exposure to racing. It's fun and addictive, and it's quickly become like a second job (in a good way). Racing is a great way to fuel my hyper-competitive nature, and Route 1 is a great team with great people. Cesar Picco Age: 33 I started racing as a junior in 1988 and was drawn into an addiction that I haven't been able to kick even with the help of various 12 step programs. I started with a few local crits. Next thing I knew I was dragging my parents all over the east coast from race to race. While in college I started really mountain biking and found a new mutation for my addiction. After college I started working extremely long hours keeping me away from my bike. Went through full withdrawal and as an after-effect gained a massive amount of weight. Thank goodness I fell off the wagon. I dusted off my bike. I quit my line of work. Took a job at a local bike shop. I then rode all the time. I moved to Germany to be close to a great gal. There I lied, cheated, stole (okay mostly borrowed her grandmother's bike) to get a chance to ride on some perfect roads and trails. Asked this girl to marry me and brought her back to Arlington. I met Abby Raymond at a cross race and he brought me out to a Sunday ride and I met and joined some of the greatest addicts in the DC area. After several touring adventures on my hybrid I bought my first real road bike in 1999. I started riding the Sunday shop ride with Route 1 Velo (then College Park Racing ) to prepare for a Skyline Drive ride I was planning with some friends in the spring of 2000. With a lot of encouragement and waiting for the fat slow dude the I was talked into trying my first race at the Greenbelt Training series later that summer and was hooked. Eric Griffin Born: 1973 I ran track and cross-country in high school and college, and only occasionally rode a bike for "cross-training." After a few years of post-college running, I grew frustrated with my diminishing running performance and lack of time to train like I did back in "the day." I decided to give cycling a shot since it was a clean slate with no performance benchmark for me to measure myself against. I started mostly from the fitness perspective, getting good aerobic workouts while saving my knees. My competitiveness took over, and I decided to give racing a try. It was a bit demoralizing to go from having success in running races to being utterly destroyed in cycling races, but it didn't dampen the fun! I race when I can, and enjoy the team camaraderie and friendships that being a part of R1V has produced. Favorite Quote:
George Branyan Age: 44 I started riding regularly again (since childhood) in 2004 when I noticed that I was about to hit 180 lbs. which, at 5' 11,'' would have made me officially "overweight." So I figured out a way to ride my old mountain bike to my job near BWI 2 or 3 times a week (not all the way-- I used the B-30 bus). Then I got a great job in DC with the Ped-Bike Program at DDOT, sold the second car, and began riding to the metro every day and then all the way to work a couple days a week. In short, I got hooked on riding. Then fellow Greenbelt dad and R1V teammate Raymond Peterson and I convinced our wives that we needed road bikes and there was no looking back. I started racing last summer in 3 Greenbelt races and actually held on to finish the last one with the pack. That got me hooked on racing. (BTW, I now weigh 153 lbs.) Having a friendly group of riders/racers to learn from makes R1V an excellent club. Also, several R1V folks live near me so it's easy to ride with teammates. Hans Manske Age: 24 I moved to DC for work and needed a Cannondale dealer to work on my bike. I came into CHB and ended up working as a mechanic one day a week, which turned into a full-time gig as a salesperson, mechanic, and website dude. Racing in college put me in an aggressive mindset in terms of road riding, as well as many years beforehand with mountain bike riding and racing, so R1V was a natural extension for me. My favorite race so far in the area has been the RFK crit, but the Coppi road race sounds like a blast as well. R1V is a great group of people that I enjoy riding and racing with very much. James Saunders Age: 39 I did not start riding a bicycle again until Spring of 2004. I wanted to get into better shape and lose weight after I stopped smoking. 2006 has been my first year of racing and I have progressed quite a bit. I started the year or racing on a Jamis cyclocross bike. I am now riding a Cannondale Six13 bike. Next year my goal is to be more competitive and finish in the top 10 in some races. I know I will never be an elite racer but I just want to competitive in the fields I race in. I look forward to riding for Route 1 Velo and racing the Greenbelt Series again.
Jeff Sarnacki Age: 47 I’m originally from Michigan and am a huge Michigan football fan. I’m the father of two young adults both of whom I’ve very proud of. I’ve been in DC since “04” and plan on staying. Jesse Leifert Born: 1977 I started riding BMX bikes in the third grade. Never raced, but rode a lot and enjoyed what the bike had to offer. Ran track in high school and college and bought my first road bike in 1998. Raced triathlons through 2002, burned out, and traded in the tri bike for a road bike. Spent 5 years doing 1 to 2 Cat 5 races a year. Met up with the Route 1 Velo gang during one of their skills and drills down at Hains Point and joined up. Finally got focused in 2007 with the goal to improve and upgrade to Cat 3 by the end of the 2007 season. Joel Steen Age: 34 My parents moved to Michigan when I was 12. Trying to make new friends my dad and I went to a club bike ride he had heard about. The people were really nice and rode with and talked to us for the first few miles as they rolled through town. Once they hit the city limits though, they took off like they were on motorcycles. Matt Hendrey Born: 1973 I grew up a swimmer, but started cycling after graduating from college and retiring from the sport of swimming. My father has been riding since the late eighties and in 1998 he rode a local MS 150 by himself. That winter I decided that it would be fun to get in shape so that I could do the 1999 edition with him. Once I started riding I got hooked. My former college roommate, Brandon Lumm, introduced me to the team and I’ve enjoyed the club friendships ever since. On the personal side, I’m married to a very supportive wife and we have a seven year-old daughter and a two year-old son. Mernon Grant Age: 42 Why I joined R1V: I was interested in trying some racing and was shopping around for a club to join when I met two members of R1V at the Hains Point Sprints (Ryan Douglas and Rodges Ankrah). Pete Van Riper Born: 1966 I happened across the remnants of the shop ride, came out the next week, and thanks to R1V, made the transition from solo explorer to a plucky group rider capable of hammering at the front and taking a town line sprint when the rest of the field is not paying attention…also not to bad at nabbing a KOM now and then. Except for the daily commute, all my time on the bike is either getting ready for, riding in, or recovering from big mountain centuries. The Arrow Bicycle shop ride, and racing at Greenbelt are a great way to build solid form for the big days in the hills. Favorite Quote: God Damn Strines Raymond Peterson Age: 44 I started riding when I was in kindergarten. After college in 1986 I started on my old ten-speed and quickly switched to a Miyata. By 1988 I was on a Gios Torino and logging 5,000 miles per year. In 1991 I raced category 4 in New Mexico, logging over 9,000 miles. I won a training time trial and criterium and I placed highly in a number of official criteriums and road races. I participated in the 3-day Tour of the Gila. My personal records were a 58:30 40K, a 4:10:00 century and 1:35:00 half-century. I continued to ride for the next 15 years but I paid more attention to finishing my Ph.D., getting married, having kids and starting a business. At the start of 2006 I bought training books and a road bike and raced category 5. I placed 2nd at Murad Road Race, 3rd at Turkey Day Criterium, and 4th in the 4/5 35+ category at the Back To School Criterium. In late 2009 I moved to DC from New Mexico and rode a full schedule of CX races. I noticed a lot of R1V jerseys at the CX races and appreciated that the team promoted its own CX race. I did a few shop rides and joined the team in April 2010 and have enjoyed riding, racing with and getting to know the team members. Robb Lee Age: 43 Chris Militello of Capitol Hill Bikes always treated me incredibly well when I would visit DC while living in Toronto. We had mutual race friends from the past. He talked about me joining R1V when I returned to the states. I did join and I’ve met some really good people through R1V. It’s a good fit for me given my ever-expanding family and lack of time to be focused solely on racing and training. And, I can see it would be even a better fit if I ever choose to refocus on racing again. Favorite Quote: A man cannot stand on your back unless it is bent.

Scott Cernich Age: 33 I was born and raised in New Orleans. I came to DC in 2001 after stops in Boston (law school) and New Jersey (wife’s graduate school). I was a football player in high school weighing in a 225 lbs.—wasn’t much for endurance sports. I ballooned to 250+ pounds in college, started running my senior year, dropped some weight, ran some more, trained for and ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 1998, got down to 185. After a string of overuse injuries from running, I bought my first road bike (Specialized) at Capitol Hill Bikes in March 2003. I was looking for a different way to stay in shape. I started doing the shop ride and some of the Route 1 Velo folks talked me into coming out to race Greenbelt. Got hooked on riding and racing.
Servio Medina Age: 40 A second knee surgery in 1999 got me thinking about cause and affect. After 10 years of competitive Ultimate Frisbee (and many other injuries), I turned in one set of cleats for another. Rode *all* the time, seeking out every group ride that De Land, FL had to offer...which in 1999 meant 2-5 riders (Scott F. can attest). When the group rides numbered 5, we took turns "chasing the rabbit": one took off time-trialing; minutes later the "pack" (if that's what you could call it) chased. We saw about 1-2 cars the entire time. The roads were fuh-lat. Rotations and sprints were the thing. Never had so much fun in a rotation. Example: 25 miles from home, one rider says she needs to be home in about an hour. The five of us pace-lined her home in time...we went for beers. Since moving to DC in 2002, I have been actively involved in racing and promoting cycling - first with NCVC and now Route 1 Velo. After "racing in the pack" a lot, I found my racing edge in 2003 as a CAT4, winning three races, including the Virginia State Criterium Championship, and placing top ten in a handful of others. My last race as a CAT4 that year resulted in a mandatory upgrade. That was a good year. Early in 2004, I was hospitalized with a virus that kept me off the bike for the first part of season. After a stellar comeback that included successful team tactics and victories (helped lead out a sprinter for the CAT3 win at CSC), I succumbed to a relapse that cost the remainder of the season. I decided to lay low and focus on supporting the club, bide my time, and live to race another season. Things turned around in 2005. From Festival of Speed in Orlando, FL early in the year (6th), to the winning move (from the gun) in Silver Spring that I helped initiate (4th), to a TTT (1st), it felt good to be doing something right on the bike - based in large part on teamwork (my own and others' teams). Then in 2006, I hung the bike up (again). Needed a mental and physical break. I joined Route 1 Velo to help foster cycling and a team that races together well. I have seen the club grow from a handful of racers that showed up at races, to a fun, well-respected, talented group of men and women that show up to race...well. Now, in the middle of 2007, the bug is back. I am riding a lot again, and wanting more. Stay tuned. Favorite Quote:
Steve Poole Age: 50 I have always been interested in bike riding. However, my first ten years after College were jobs requiring extensive travel. I started riding again in 1989 with an old Peugeot. It didn’t take long to get hooked, but it took a year or so to be introduced to racing. I have never placed above 20th, but did enjoy a team time trial in 1997 with the College Park team. Doug O’Donnell, Dave Campbell, Kemal Tuncer and I did the 25 mile Church Creek course in 59:52. We earned the team’s only bar points that year.
